BRAZIL'S
AMAZON LODGES
|
| |
The Amazon Jungle stretches across South
America from the mouth of the river in Brazil right back to the
lee of the Andes in Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador.
Consequently, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru have
jungle lodges that offer safe and comfortable jungle
experiences, while Bolivia has vast tracks of jungle which can
be accessed but have very little in the way of infrastructure.

'AMAZON LODGE'
|
| |
 |
| |
In the heart
of Brazil’s Amazon Jungle, an exciting place waits for you “The
Amazon Lodge”. Inaugurated in 1982, it was the first floating
lodge in the Amazon, being rebuilt recently in order to provide
the guests more comfort and pleasure. The Amazon Lodge is
located about 4 hours away (80 km or 50 miles ) from Manaus,
Southbank of the Amazon River,on the Parana do Mamori River
system, upstream Rio Juma.
The Amazon Lodge consists of a central "open air" floating
lodge, where the “central service area” is with 3 showers and 3
toilets for common use. There are 6 more floating lodges for the
accommodations – providing a total of 18 guest rooms, all
protected with mosquito nets. The rooms are simple with two
single beds and have no private bathroom, only a washbasin and a
fan.
Reception and Bar - with comfortable sofas, hammocks and chairs,
perfect for relaxing before and after excursions, or a chat with
new friends accompanied by a local drink. The “Roof Top”
Restaurant has a great atmosphere for experimenting delicious
local cuisine – built in a typical architecture of rustic style,
and all environments are protected by mosquito nets. Recreation
Area has a large sun deck, where you can swim, sun bath, read
and relax with nature. At the lodge there is a generator with
110V energy available for a few hours at night only. Alternative
sources of energy are also being used. No hot water is available
(water temperature is usually 26-32 degrees Celsius, all the
year around). The lights for the rooms, as well as the
recreation area are supplied by alternative 12 V batteries.
All excursions leave by wooden canoe from the main deck. Many of
the excursions are done in paddle canoes for 2 guests only. The
transfer from Manaus to the lodge or vice-versa is divided in
the following parts:

UAKARI FLOATING LODGE
|
|
| |
 |
| |
The Uakari
Floating Lodge was designed for minimum environmental impact.
Its 10 spacious suites are equipped with solar power, natural
ventilation and a sewage filtration system. The two-floor
central unit has a restaurant, a bar, library and video and
conference room.
The location
of the floating lodge has been carefully chosen: it is in a bend
in the river with ample opportunities for observing wildlife
without leaving the premises.
The Mamirauá
Sustainable Development Reserve is the largest Brazilian
protected area (1.124.000 ha) devoted to the conservation of
flooded forests, an ecosystem which holds much biodiversity and
many rare species. It was the first Brazilian conservation unit
to give local people a major share of responsibility for the
management of its natural resources.
Mamirauá is a
paradise which offers a unique experience to people who are
fascinated by nature and are interested in interacting with
local people. The ecotourism programme was developed as a means
for funding the Mamirauá Project and providing an alternative
source of income for local communities.
Thanks to the
conservation efforts which began in 1983, Mamirauá has become a
wildlife refuge. Among the wildlife attractions, visitors will
find endemic species like the white uakari monkey and the black
headed squirrel monkey. Mamirauá is also home to other species
like the Amazon pink river dolphin, the red howler monkey, the
scarlet-macaw and the black cayman. Other amazing creatures
found in Mamirauá are the harpy eagle, the jaguar and the
umbrella bird.

"Guanavenas" Indian tribe, who disappeared during the
seventeenth century, and to whom the name of the lodge makes
homage.
