'COLONIAL HACIENDA' TOURS (3, 4 & 8 day rides)
"I
have had a fantastic time exploring a country I knew
very little about. The horses were excellent, the
scenery out of this world....the haciendas were so
lovely and unexpected." J.A., Sept 2005
'Our
'Colonial Hacienda' tours combine breathtaking riding
routes through the mountains by day, complimented by
overnight stays in the luxurious and distinctive
surroundings of Ecuador's highland haciendas, the best
preserved in all of South America.
We ride amidst some of the country's most spectacular
scenery as we discover hidden glacial valleys and the
spectacular 'Avenue of the Volcanoes', skirting the
towering, snow-capped peaks of Cayambe and Cotopaxi. En
route, we stop off to visit colourful markets and
traditional craft villages as we pass through the
agricultural and indigenous heartland of the Ecuadorian
Andes.
After
a day in the saddle, we spend the night in one of the
Sierra's unique haciendas, the grand colonial farming
estates built by the Spanish Conquistadors, many of
which are still the homes of Ecuador's noblest families.
Blending modern comforts, period detail and ancient
traditions, the haciendas offer an insight into life as
it was lived in centuries gone by and are amongst the
most memorable places to stay anywhere in the country.

'ANDEAN ADVENTURE' TOURS (1-9 day rides)
"I really did have the time of my life...and I miss
the mountains and wide open spaces of Ecuador....Thanks
again for the great ride - such a lot of fun, it really
was a brilliant experience - I will certainly recommend
you to any riders."
K.F. Oct 2000
Our 'Andean Adventure' tours are designed for riders
with a slightly tighter budget who are also looking for
a more adventurous experience of the Ecuadorian Andes.
Guests can actively participate in the care of their
horses (as much or as little as they choose) and in
place of haciendas, we spend the night at traditional
stable cottages, charming country inns, and on some
tours camp out underneath the stars.
The
riding is very varied with a chance of riding fast as
well as tackling the steep Andean slopes. We ride close
to Cotopaxi, the second highest active volcano in the
world and follow the paths cut out by wild horses where
we often meet the 'chagras' (Andean cowhands) dressed in
their special chaps and ponchos, their saddles kitted
out with lassos and their stirrups resembling clogs.
En
route we visit sites of cultural and historical
interest, we go in search of highland wildlife including
hummingbirds, white-tailed deer and the mighty Andean
condor.
"I
have been on 5 riding holidays and can honestly say
Ecuador comes out as the winner."
P.T. Jan 2004
